Google broad algorithm updates occur several times per year (with smaller ones happening daily) though very few are confirmed by Google but instead are picked up via premium tools that monitor millions of indexed URLs and pattern changes. The screenshot below from our account shows the SERP volatility for the last 30 days being high to very high.
On March 12th, 2019, Google confirmed that a broad core algorithm update had indeed taken place.
Most of these smaller updates have little effect on businesses though the broad updates can have a big effect on websites dependant on how they carry out their search engine optimisation strategy.
If your rankings have recently changed, it’s very well possible that it’s related to this latest broad core ranking update.
“Each day, Google usually releases one or more changes designed to improve our results. Some are focused around specific improvements. Some are broad changes. Last week, we released a broad core algorithm update. We do these routinely several times per year. As with any update, some sites may note drops or gains. There’s nothing wrong with pages that may now perform less well. Instead, it’s that changes to our systems are benefiting pages that were previously under-rewarded. There’s no “fix” for pages that may perform less well other than to remain focused on building great content. Over time, it may be that your content may rise relative to other pages.”
Though we and other experts in the industry don’t agree with the statement that there is no fix and to remain focused on building great content. Ok, the great content bit is obviously true but we’re focusing on the no fix element. We’ve helped businesses increase their search engine rankings by providing a managed SEO service as well as on-site training. Great content is only one factor when it comes to improving your SERPs, and with hundreds of factors determining where a website ranks, there’s always more that can be done.
