Google Sep 19 Core Update Rolled out Last Week
Google rolled out its latest broad core updates last week, which by now should have rolled out for everyone.
What is a core update?
A Core update is when Google makes adjustments to its search engine ranking algorithms. These ‘broad’ updates roll out every quarter with the smaller updates happening on a daily basis.
Why are there so many updates?
The web is forever evolving and so is the way people search for content, questions, products and so forth. Google owns the majority share of search engine users and as such are constantly updating their algorithms to ensure that its users are finding more relevant search results. Answering the user’s intent has always been at the forefront of their updates.
Over 3200 changes were made last year
As surprising as that number may sound, you read that correctly. As the web is forever evolving, so is search engine optimisation. With so many changes being rolled out on a very frequent basis, it’s important that you’re constantly trying to improve your web site and keeping up to date with the latest protocols.
In 2018, there was a huge number of updates that affected how the famous search engine indexed pages. Google said:
“Our search algorithms are complex math equations that rely on hundreds of variables, and last year alone, we made more than 3,200 changes to our search systems.”
Compare that to 2010 when there were about 400 changes made within the year, and it’s easy to see things are moving at a very fast pace now as technology evolves.
Rankings change after an update
When Google rolls out updates, especially the core ones, rankings change. If you’ve noticed a drop after one of these updates, sitting back and doing nothing will ensure that you don’t rise back up through the ranking positions by the time the next core update is rolled out.
The Daily Mail is a good example of this. The major newspaper suffered a massive drop in traffic after the June update was released from Google. They publicly spoke about it online, and after making a lot of changes, have started to see their search positions, and traffic, go back up since the update rolled out last week.
We often speak to clients who ask us about the length of time an SEO project takes, and our answer is always the same. SEO is evolving, so your internal or external marketing strategy should be as well. It’s not a one-stop process.
If you are positioned at the top of the first page, you can probably take a break. Until your competitor overtakes you of course – which will happen at some stage. It’s not only an evolving field, but it’s also a competitive one.
Google’s response to ‘What can I do?’ for those who have suffered losses is simply: “We suggest focusing on ensuring you’re offering the best content you can. That’s what our algorithms seek to reward.”
But there are a lot of ways of accomplishing that. Having the best content, without the structure to match doesn’t help. Having the right products, without the correct data markup, doesn’t do you any favours. Having the best-looking website, that’s slow to load… you get the idea.
